Calvin Verdonk has opened up about his early experiences with the Indonesia National Team, highlighting the intense passion and unwavering support from local fans as something entirely new in his football journey.

The 27-year-old left-back, who completed his naturalization process in early 2024, admitted he was surprised by the amount of attention he received upon arriving in Indonesia — something he rarely encountered during his time in the Netherlands.

“You’re stopped on every corner. It was very fun at first, and it still is,” said Verdonk, quoted by Forza NEC.

Verdonk, who played for NEC Nijmegen in the Dutch Eredivisie, said the fan culture in Indonesia is far more vibrant and interactive compared to Europe. He revealed that public enthusiasm and the way fans approach players in everyday settings caught him off guard initially.

Although adapting to the new environment took some time, Verdonk now feels more at ease and embraces the warmth shown by Indonesian supporters — many of whom have expressed high hopes for his contribution to the Garuda squad.

Having been officially called up by head coach Shin Tae-yong, Verdonk is expected to bolster Indonesia’s defense line ahead of a series of crucial international fixtures. His technical ability, combined with European-level experience, positions him as a strong asset in the team’s ongoing evolution.
