Button: Collision with Piastri Becomes Turning Point in Norris’s Career

Former F1 world champion Jenson Button has expressed optimism about Lando Norris’s development — despite the McLaren driver’s recent collision with teammate Oscar Piastri at the Canadian GP.

Speaking at the F1 film premiere in New York, Button drew parallels with his own experience alongside Lewis Hamilton:

“Yes, it was Lando’s mistake, but these things happen. Lewis and I crashed into each other on the same straight 14 years ago.”

The incident occurred as both McLaren cars competed for fourth position — Norris misjudged the gap while attempting an outside overtake, resulting in his front wing being damaged after contact with Piastri’s rear tire.

Button sees the positive aspects of internal team rivalry:

“I like that we have the inter-team fight because this is the fight for the world championship. They need to seize this opportunity, because you never know when the next one will come.”

Norris himself responded to the incident thoughtfully:

“I regretted what happened and apologized for it. It’s part of racing. I have to take it on the chin and focus on performing better in the next race.”
