Brian Yang falls to fellow countryman at Canada Open 2025

In an all-Canadian derby at the Canada Open 2025 held at Markham Pan Am Centre, Ontario, Brian Yang had to acknowledge the superiority of his compatriot Viktor Lai — ending his journey in the round of 32.

The sixth seed of this BWF Super 300 tournament performed below his best level — losing in straight games with scores of 12-21, 10-21 within 41 minutes to the world number 72 player.

This defeat comes as a surprising result for the world number 29 Yang, considering his notable achievement of defeating Jonatan Christie at the Sudirman Cup about four years ago.

Lai showed dominance from the start of the match — reading Yang’s game well and securing three consecutive points that left his opponent struggling to develop his gameplay.
