Brandon Scheunemann becomes surprise pick in Indonesia U-23 defense

According to Bolasport.com, Brandon Scheunemann emerged as coach Gerald Vanenburg’s unexpected choice to guard Indonesia U-23 team’s defense line at the ASEAN Cup U-23 2025.

Indonesia U-23 team secured a decisive 8-0 victory over Brunei Darussalam in Group A match yesterday. The game marked the surprising debut of goalkeeper Muhammad Ardiansyah — who had never received a junior national team call-up before.

Brandon Scheunemann — the Malang-born defender with German heritage currently playing for Arema FC — performed solidly alongside Muhammad Ferarri in central defense. This duo managed to maintain a clean sheet throughout the match.

Vanenburg’s decision to choose Brandon came as a surprise — considering several regular junior national team players were left out, including Kadek Arel and Kakang Rudianto.
