Bonmatí’s Goal Sends Spain to Euro Final

Aitana Bonmatí scored the winning goal in the 113th minute that led Spain to their first-ever victory over Germany and secured their maiden Euro final appearance at Letzigrund Stadium, Zurich.

The Spanish midfielder capitalized on Athenea del Castillo’s pass inside the penalty area — turning and firing a shot at Ann-Katrin Berger’s near post.

“We had analyzed the goalkeeper with the coach and knew that in these situations she sometimes leaves space at the near post,” Bonmatí revealed after being named player of the match.

Berger, who had been outstanding throughout the tournament, acknowledged her mistake in the goal:

“I take responsibility for this defeat. The near post had to be covered, that’s clear. I feel incredibly sorry, not for myself, but for the team who gave everything.”

Spain will now face England in the final in Basel — a rematch of last year’s World Cup final which La Roja won 1-0.
