Bonmati Rejoins Spain Squad After Recovery from Meningitis

Ballon d’Or holder Aitana Bonmati has rejoined the Spanish national team for the Women’s European Championship in Switzerland — after recovering from viral meningitis that required hospitalization.

The Spanish Football Federation shared photos of the Barcelona midfielder’s arrival at the team hotel on Monday night, though uncertainty remains about when she will be ready to play.

Bonmati — who has scored 30 goals in 78 appearances for Spain — missed the 3-1 victory against Japan in a friendly match few days ago.

“Fortunately, everything is going well. I hope to return soon,” Bonmati wrote on social media while still in hospital.

The return of this key Spanish player provides a major morale boost for the world champions ahead of their Group B opener against Portugal.
