Bernardo Silva appointed as new Manchester City captain

For the first time in his career, Pep Guardiola has directly appointed Bernardo Silva as Manchester City’s new captain — a decision made after witnessing several unfavorable situations last season.

The 30-year-old Portuguese player will be supported by three vice-captains — Ruben Dias, Rodri, and Erling Haaland. This appointment draws particular attention as Silva himself has hinted at possibly leaving the club when his contract expires next year.

“I know what I’m going to do, but it’s not the time to talk about that,” Silva stated. “I’m very focused on my season and performing well for Man City.”

Guardiola also highlighted Haaland’s leadership potential, who signed a long-term contract five months ago. “Erling Haaland is very young, but he needs to start learning what it means to be a captain — because we hope he will be here for many years,” explained the Spanish coach.

This decision marks a departure from the previous tradition where captains were chosen through player and staff voting. Guardiola indicated that after the Club World Cup, there might be one or two more vice-captains added.
