Bernard Tomic Secures Long-Awaited Comeback Win at Mallorca Open 2025

After years out of the spotlight, Australian tennis player Bernard Tomic made headlines again on Tuesday by securing his first ATP Tour-level win since 2021, defeating fellow countryman Rinky Hijikata in the opening round of the 2025 Mallorca Championships.

Tomic, currently ranked No. 248 in the world, came from a set down to claim a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory—his first main-draw triumph on the ATP Tour in nearly four years.

The 32-year-old showcased glimpses of the powerful baseline game that once propelled him into the world’s top 20. After a sluggish start, he found his rhythm in the second set, breaking Hijikata at a pivotal moment before dominating the decider with confident shot-making and improved movement.

“It’s been a long road back,” Tomic said post-match.

“I’ve worked hard to rebuild my game and fitness. Getting a win like this means a lot.”

Once hailed as one of Australia’s brightest tennis prospects, Tomic’s career has been marked by inconsistency, off-court controversies, and extended absences from the top tier. His last ATP-level victory came in Astana in 2021, and since then, he has primarily competed on the ITF and Challenger circuits.

With this latest win, Tomic advances to the second round in Mallorca, where he will face seventh seed Roberto Bautista Agut, a seasoned Spaniard known for his solid all-court game.

While it remains to be seen whether this signals a full resurgence, Tomic’s return to the ATP winner’s circle is a reminder of the raw talent that once made him a rising starperhaps not quite forgotten after all.
