Bayern Munich vs Auckland City FC: Preparations for a David vs Goliath Clash

The opening match of Group C in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 will see Bundesliga champions and European giants Bayern Munich face off against New Zealand’s most successful amateur club, Auckland City FC. The match takes place at TQL Stadium, Cincinnati, USA, on Sunday, June 15, 2025. Bayern Munich arrive with high ambitions to add another global trophy to their cabinet. Vincent Kompany’s squad just wrapped up the Bundesliga season with a dominant 4-0 win over Hoffenheim and have been preparing intensively at their base camp in Orlando, USA. Some key players, including Jamal Musiala and Dayot Upamecano, have recovered from injuries and are back in training. New signings Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof are also registered and ready for the tournament. Harry Kane, Bundesliga’s top scorer last season with 26 goals, will lead the attack, supported by creative talents like Michael Olise and Thomas Müller, who is set for his final tournament with Bayern. Kompany may rotate the squad as some internationals have just joined up, but Bayern are expected to field a strong team to ensure a winning start in a group that also features Boca Juniors and Benfica.

Auckland City FC are the only amateur team among the 32 Club World Cup participants. Despite their amateur status, they are Oceania’s dominant force, with 13 OFC Champions League titles and a record 12 appearances at this tournament. Their players juggle football with full-time jobs as teachers, real estate agents, and more, training in their spare time.

The squad has been in the US for over a week, acclimatizing and playing warm-up matches. However, they will be without head coach Paul Posa, who stayed in New Zealand for personal reasons. Club legend Ivan Vicelich, who led Auckland to a historic third place in 2014, is taking charge for the tournament.

Auckland’s players know they are not favorites, but view matches against Bayern and other group giants as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Captain Mario Ilich said, “At the end of the day, it’s 11 against 11. We’ll enjoy the occasion and give our best on the pitch.

Bayern Munich are clear favorites, but Auckland City bring the spirit of the underdog and the magic of football dreams. This match is not just a contest of skill, but a celebration of football’s universal spirit and the power of ambition.
