Barcelona ready to trigger Nico Williams’ 58 million euro release clause

According to ESPN, Barcelona president Joan Laporta has declared the club’s readiness to meet Nico Williams’ 58 million euro release clause from Athletic Club — despite concerns about their financial capabilities.

Athletic Club previously held a meeting with LaLiga to discuss Barcelona’s compliance with financial fair play rules, particularly after the Catalan club signed goalkeeper Joan García for 25 million euros last week.

“Barcelona is prepared to take appropriate action if an opportunity arises in the transfer market including a release clause,” Laporta stated when asked about the potential Williams transfer.

The 22-year-old winger has communicated his desire to leave Athletic Club this summer through his agent, Felix Tainta. Williams — who plays alongside his brother Iñaki at San Mamés — has recorded 167 appearances and scored 31 goals since his first-team debut.

Barcelona had previously targeted Williams last summer, but the transfer fell through due to player registration issues. Now, Laporta emphasizes that Barcelona has met all LaLiga requirements to be active in the transfer market.
