Nico Williams has disappointed Barcelona by deciding to extend his contract with Athletic Bilbao until 2035 — despite previously reaching an initial agreement with the Catalan club.

The 22-year-old winger was close to joining Barcelona with a six-year contract offer and a salary of 7-8 million euros per season. However, the deal fell through as Barcelona couldn’t provide player registration guarantees under La Liga rules.

Athletic Bilbao successfully capitalized on this situation by securing the future of Inaki Williams‘ younger brother with a long-term contract. This setback has led Barcelona to shift their focus to two new targets for the upcoming summer transfer window.
