Azteca Stadium To Be Renamed Ahead Of 2026 World Cup

The iconic Azteca Stadium will undergo a name change to “Estadio Ciudad de Mexico” and is set to reopen in March 2026, just months before hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Opening Match Set for June 11, 2026

According to Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada, the historic venue — which hosted the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals — will welcome fans again with the tournament’s opening match on June 11, 2026. It will also host several group stage and knockout matches.

Major Renovations Underway

The stadium is undergoing significant renovations, expected to be completed by early 2026. Upgrades include:
  • New FIFA-standard changing rooms

  • Improved hospitality areas

  • Expanded VIP sections

  • Additional seating in former box and lounge areas

Great projects for a great city — projects that will continue to benefit the population in all aspects, based on the comprehensive mobility plan combined with technology,” said Clara Brugada.

Part of Broader City Revitalization

This transformation is part of the Tlalpan district revitalization plan, which also involves enhancements to roads, bike lanes, and public transport infrastructure. Additionally, Mexico City will host the largest FIFA Fan Fest at Zocalo Square, offering free live match screenings to the public.
