Australia Face Two Crucial Matches on Road to 2026 World Cup

The Australian national team is entering a pivotal phase in their quest for a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With two crucial matches ahead, the Socceroos are poised to solidify their position in Group C.

Under the guidance of head coach, Tony Popovic, Australia will first host Japan at Perth Stadium on June 5. Following this, they will travel to face Saudi Arabia at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah on June 10.

Current Group C Standings

As of the latest standings:

  • Japan – 20 points (Qualified)

  • Australia – 13 points

  • Saudi Arabia – 10 points

  • Indonesia – 9 points

  • Bahrain – 6 points

  • China – 6 points

With Japan already securing their spot, Australia aims to clinch the second automatic qualification position. A victory against Japan would significantly boost their chances, while a favorable result against Saudi Arabia could seal their qualification.

Popovic’s Strategy and Squad Updates

Coach Tony Popovic has emphasized the importance of these matches, stating:

“We need to focus on our game and secure the necessary points.”

The squad sees the inclusion of young talent Paul Okon-Engstler, son of former Socceroos captain, Paul Okon, bringing fresh energy to the team.

Despite Japan fielding a squad missing several key players, Popovic remains cautious, acknowledging their depth and experience. The Socceroos are determined to capitalize on their home advantage in Perth and carry the momentum into their away fixture in Jeddah.
