Atletico Madrid Reach Agreement with Real Betis for Johnny Cardoso Transfer

According to ESPN sources, Johnny Cardoso — the United States men’s national team midfielder — is set to join Atletico Madrid after both clubs reached a verbal agreement.

The 23-year-old player has become Diego Simeone’s primary target to strengthen Atletico’s midfield for next season — with an agreed transfer fee exceeding 30 million euros.

The New Jersey native who also holds an Italian passport joined Real Betis about 1.5 years ago from Brazilian club Internacional — his solid performances with the Seville-based club resulted in a contract extension until 2030.

Tottenham holds a priority option to sign Cardoso for 25 million euros until the end of this June, however the arrival of new coach Thomas Frank replacing Ange Postecoglou has complicated a move to North London.
