Athletic Club questions Barcelona’s financial ability to sign Nico Williams

Athletic Club recently held a meeting with LaLiga to question Barcelona’s ability to sign new players — specifically regarding their interest in Nico Williams.

Barcelona’s sporting director Deco previously revealed that Williams, who has a €58 million release clause, has shown strong desire to join the LaLiga champions this summer.

Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte met directly with LaLiga president Javier Tebas in Madrid to discuss this matter. In their official statement, the Basque club emphasized they will defend their interests in accordance with financial fair play regulations approved by all clubs.

“I don’t understand Athletic’s reaction. With all due respect, everyone should mind their own business,” said Barcelona president Joan Laporta in response to Athletic Club’s complaints.

Nico Williams, who has made 167 appearances for Athletic since 2021 — has reportedly communicated his desire to leave the club this summer through his agent Felix Tainta, though no specific destination club was mentioned.
