Arsenal Break World Transfer Record to Sign Olivia Smith

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Canada international Olivia Smith on a long-term contract — marking the first £1 million transfer in women’s football history.

The Champions League winners matched Liverpool’s expectations for the 20-year-old striker — surpassing the previous transfer record held by Naomi Girma’s £820,000 move to Chelsea.

“It’s a privilege and an honor to sign for Arsenal. My dream is to compete for the biggest titles in England and Europe, and I’m excited to get started here with Arsenal,” Smith stated.

Olivia Smith impressed during her time at Liverpool last season — scoring nine goals in 25 appearances across all competitions. Previously, she played for Sporting CP in Portugal, where she netted 16 goals in 28 matches.

Arsenal manager Renée Slegers said — “Olivia is an exciting young player and we believe she can make a big contribution here at Arsenal. We’ve been impressed by her mentality and character, excelling in two European leagues at such a young age.”

Smith also holds the distinction of being Canada’s youngest-ever international player — making her debut at age 15 in 2019, and has since accumulated 18 caps with 4 goals.
