Arie Luyendyk Wants Max Verstappen to Race in IndyCar after Formula 1

INDIANAPOLIS — Two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Arie Luyendyk has expressed his interest in seeing Formula 1 superstar Max Verstappen take on a new challenge in IndyCar once his F1 career concludes.

Speaking in a recent interview, the Dutch-American motorsport legend said he believes Verstappen’s driving talent would translate exceptionally well to the American open-wheel series.

“I would love to see Max Verstappen race in IndyCar,” Luyendyk said.

“He has the skill, the mindset, and the adaptability to succeed on any track — road, street, or oval.”

Verstappen’s future after F1 a growing topic

Verstappen, a three-time Formula 1 world champion with Red Bull Racing, has previously hinted that he may not remain in F1 for as long as many expect. Despite dominating the sport in recent seasons, the 27-year-old has spoken candidly about exploring other racing categories in the future.

Luyendyk, who closely follows international motorsport, suggested that IndyCar — known for its competitive field and diverse track formats — could offer Verstappen the kind of challenge he craves.

“It’s a driver’s series,” Luyendyk explained.

“The cars are more equal, and you have to hustle every lap. I think that would really appeal to someone like Max.”

IndyCar growing in international prestige

IndyCar has seen a resurgence in recent years, attracting a younger fan base and drawing attention from international drivers. With names like Romain Grosjean, Marcus Ericsson, and even former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve having made the transition, the idea of Verstappen joining the grid is not far-fetched.

Luyendyk believes Verstappen’s entry would be a massive boost to the series.

“If Max ever decided to come over, it would be huge for IndyCar. It would bring global attention and take the level of competition even higher.”

No immediate plans — but possibilities remain

While there is currently no indication that Verstappen is planning a move to IndyCar in the near future, the growing speculation around his long-term future in motorsport continues to spark interest.

For now, Verstappen remains focused on adding to his F1 legacy. But with endorsements from legends like Luyendyk, the door to a post-F1 IndyCar career remains wide open — and fans on both sides of the Atlantic are starting to imagine what that might look like.
