Apple Eyes US Formula 1 Broadcasting Rights After F1 Film Success

Apple is considering acquiring Formula 1 commercial rights in the United States — according to a Financial Times report.

The success of the F1 film starring Brad Pitt and Damson Idris serves as the main driver for this move. The film has generated global box office revenue exceeding $293 million — making it the most successful theatrical release by the tech giant.

“To bring something authentic to the sport and tell a great story about the ups and downs of life — F1 hit all those aspects,” said Tim Cook, Apple CEO.

The current broadcasting contract with ESPN will expire at the end of the 2025 season. Although ESPN had the opportunity to negotiate without competitors, that window has now closed.

Apple is no stranger to sports streaming after securing Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer broadcasting rights. Netflix is also reportedly interested in making a bid — given the success of their Drive to Survive documentary series which has boosted F1’s popularity in the United States.
