Alwi Farhan Stopped in Second Round of Malaysia Masters 2025

The Indonesian youngster battles hard before falling to Weng Hong Yang.

Alwi Farhan’s journey at the Malaysia Masters 2025 came to an end in the second round after a tense three-game defeat against Weng Hong Yang of China, held at the Axiata Arena, Kuala Lumpur, on Thursday (May 22).

Promising Start from the Rising Star

The world No. 29, who has been showing great promise on the international circuit, started strongly in the match. In the opening game, Alwi showed sharp footwork and offensive variety. Despite trailing early, he put together five consecutive points to take the lead and eventually claimed the first game 21-19.

The performance reflected his growing confidence, following recent consistent results at the Asian leg of the 2025 BWF World Tour.

Weng Takes Over with Tactical Adjustments

However, in the second and third games, Weng, ranked 14th in the world, adjusted his tactics and forced Alwi into extended rallies. The Chinese shuttler exploited Alwi’s backcourt positioning and capitalized on unforced errors, taking the remaining games 21-16 and 21-17.

Weng’s experience and composure under pressure became the deciding factor, especially during tight exchanges at the net.

Looking Ahead for Alwi Farhan

Although this result ends Alwi’s run at the BWF Super 500 event, his progress remains a bright spot for Indonesian men’s singles. The 20-year-old is expected to regroup ahead of the Singapore Open 2025, where he aims to continue his push toward the top 20 rankings.
