Alter Ego DelwynS Shares Reason Behind Valorant Squad Disbandment

Delwyn Sukamto, also known as Alter Ego DelwynS, recently addressed the announcement regarding the dissolution of Alter Ego’s Valorant division—a move that drew sympathy from the Valorant community in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

Earlier, Alter Ego announced the release of its entire Valorant roster and confirmed it would not return to the esports scene anytime soon. This sparked debates within the community, with many suspecting internal management issues.

Social media buzzed with theories, including claims that the team broke up due to a lack of high-profile tournaments beyond the VCT Pacific circuit, which Alter Ego did not participate in. DelwynS then responded to these rumors via his personal social media.

The CEO explained that the team had fallen too far behind in points to compete for a Tier 1 league slot, leaving no viable path to qualify. And disbanding was the only way to cut operational costs before the cost went higher.

Why did Alter Ego’s Valorant team disband? Because qualifying for the franchise league required points we couldn’t catch up to—it is almost impossible now, he said.

For your information, teams not invited to the Tier 1 circuit could compete in Tier 2 Challengers tournaments, held regionally in participating countries, with top performers advancing to a continental final.

However, after mid-2024, Riot Games merged all regional Challengers into a single competition, Challengers Pacific, streamlining Tier 2 competition across Asia (bar China) to reduce costs and prioritize Tier 1.

The move sparked backlash, with critics claiming the lack of underdog teams would make competitions less exciting to watch. And the exit of Alter Ego might soon prove the point, as they boast a loyal fanbase and are known for developing young talents through various tournaments.
