According to statements at Suzuka, Fernando Alonso compared the Japanese circuit to Monaco — both races are practically determined by qualifying results.

Last weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix proceeded with minimal overtaking action, with Max Verstappen dominating from pole position to finish. This situation recalls Monaco‘s racing characteristics, which also present limited overtaking opportunities.

“This is Suzuka, I don’t remember a race with many overtakes here without weather changes,” stated the two-time world champion.

Ferrari boss Frédéric Vasseur expressed concerns that this season could become a “qualifying championship”— if the difficult overtaking trend seen in China and Japan continues. Data shows throughout 2024 there were 70 fewer overtakes—than the previous year, despite two additional races.

All four races in 2025 have so far been won from pole position — a statistic that reinforces these concerns.

In response to overtaking limitations, F1 has announced the implementation— of a mandatory two pit stop rule for Monaco, starting in 2025.

Additionally, Suzuka now marks the beginning of a triple-header—with Bahrain and Saudi Arabia to follow, adding pressure on teams to adapt quickly in consecutive race weekends.
