Alonso still uncertain about playing Mbappé against Dortmund in quarter-finals

Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso is still considering whether to field Kylian Mbappé in the Club World Cup quarter-final match against Borussia Dortmund — the French striker continues his recovery from gastroenteritis.

“He’s getting better. He’s been improving over the last three days,” Alonso stated during a press conference at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey. “Tomorrow morning we will be deciding if he will be part of the initial eleven.”

Mbappé made his tournament debut as a substitute when Real Madrid secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Juventus in Miami — his appearance drew enthusiastic applause from the attending crowd.

During Mbappé’s absence, Gonzalo García has impressed with three goals including the winner against Juventus. Alonso indicated he’s open to the possibility of playing both players together.

Real Madrid will face an in-form Dortmund who defeated Monterrey 2-1 in the previous round — the match is expected to be closely contested.
