Alonso Dismisses “Unluckiest Driver” Claims Ahead of Monaco GP

Fernando Alonso has addressed the controversy surrounding his “unluckiest driver in the world” comments made during the Imola Grand Prix, clarifying that his words were taken out of context.

The Aston Martin driver, who is yet to score a point in the 2025 Formula 1 season, emphasized that the team’s lack of competitiveness—not luck—is the real issue.

Safety Car Strategy Backfires In Imola

The 43-year-old Spaniard endured a frustrating race weekend in Imola, where multiple interruptions—Virtual Safety Car and full Safety Car periods—compromised the team’s pit stop timing and strategy.

“I don’t believe in all those things. This is probably what we deserve. We’ve been unlucky many times, but this year we’ve been uncompetitive — and that’s the unluckiest part of everything,” said Alonso.

Alonso Defends His Record, Downplays “Unlucky” Label

Responding to media narratives, Alonso reminded fans and journalists of his illustrious career:

  • Two-time Formula 1 World Champion

  • Two-time 24 Hours of Le Mans Winner

  • WEC Champion

  • 24 Hours of Daytona Winner

“If I’m considered unlucky, I cannot imagine the other 18 drivers,” Alonso said firmly, dismissing the notion that misfortune has defined his career.

He also urged the media to interpret team radio messages with context, noting that real-time emotions don’t reflect the full picture.
