No Rest, No Recovery: Alcaraz Withdraws from Canadian Open Amid Exhaustion

Toronto, Canada — World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz has officially withdrawn from the upcoming Canadian Open (ATP Masters 1000) in Toronto, citing physical and mental exhaustion following a grueling run on the tour.

The 22-year-old Spaniard, who recently reached the final of Wimbledon 2025, admitted that his body and mind need time to recover after several consecutive weeks of intense competition. Despite an impressive season record of 48 wins and 6 losses, including five titles such as the prestigious Roland Garros, Alcaraz acknowledged he has been pushing his limits.

“After many consecutive weeks of competition without rest, I will not be able to play in Toronto this year,” Alcaraz posted on social media.

“I have small muscle issues, and I need to recover physically and mentally for what comes next. To the tournament and to my fans in Canada, I am very sorry. I will see you next year!”

His decision follows a hard-fought Wimbledon campaign that ended in a dramatic final defeat to rival Jannik Sinner.

Alcaraz is not alone in his withdrawal — Sinner, the 2023 Toronto champion, and Novak Djokovic, a four-time Canadian Open winner, have also pulled out. British No. 1 Jack Draper has withdrawn due to an arm injury, making this year’s tournament one of the most impacted by star absences.

Sinner also emphasized the importance of recovery:

“Winning that title in Toronto two years ago was the start of a really special moment for me, but after speaking with my team, I have to prioritise my health.”

The National Bank Open, a key event in the ATP Masters 1000 series, begins this Sunday and will expand to 12 days this year, with the final set for August 7.

Despite the high-profile withdrawals, tournament organizers remain optimistic, promising top-tier tennis action in Toronto — though fans will certainly feel the absence of one of the game’s brightest young stars.
