Wimbledon 2025 Begins: Alcaraz Opens Title Defense on Centre Court

JAKARTA, 30 June — The iconic Wimbledon Championships return to the All England Club today, marking the start of the 2025 edition of tennis’s most prestigious Grand Slam. Running through July 13, this year’s tournament opens with a marquee Centre Court clash featuring defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

The 21-year-old Spaniard begins his title defence against veteran Italian Fabio Fognini, with the match scheduled for 1:30 PM local time. Alcaraz, currently ranked World No. 2, arrives at Wimbledon on a hot streak after claiming both the French Open and the Queen’s Club Championships earlier this month.

Known for his explosive athleticism and composure beyond his years, Alcaraz made history at Wimbledon in 2023 when he defeated Novak Djokovic in a gripping five-set final to secure his first title on grass. Now, he returns to Centre Court aiming to become the first man since Djokovic to defend the Wimbledon crown.

“Wimbledon means everything. To step on Centre Court again as the defending champion is incredibly special,” Alcaraz said ahead of his opener.

Meanwhile, Fognini, now 37, brings decades of experience and flair to the grass courts. The former Top 10 player may no longer be at his peak, but his creativity and unpredictable shot-making still make him a dangerous first-round opponent.

This year’s men’s draw is packed with talent, including Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev, and Alexander Zverev — all strong contenders for the title. On the women’s side, spotlight players include Iga Świątek, Aryna Sabalenka, and reigning champion Markéta Vondroušová.

With sold-out crowds and millions tuning in worldwide, Wimbledon 2025 promises another thrilling chapter in tennis history — and it all begins today under the London summer sun.
