Alain Prost reveals key role in Oscar Piastri’s career

Speaking from the Goodwood House balcony, Alain Prost revealed his significant role in Oscar Piastri’s career — the driver currently leading the 2025 Formula 1 championship.

The 70-year-old F1 legend told Karun Chandhok how he convinced Renault to recruit Piastri to Alpine Academy, despite initial resistance. “I observed his talent since Formula 3, even Formula 4,” said the former Alpine non-executive director.

“I know Oscar much better because I was the one to push Renault to bring him in the academy a long time ago. They did not want to,” Prost explained.

Prost sees similarities between himself and Piastri — particularly in terms of clever overtaking strategies. Currently, the Australian McLaren driver leads his teammate Lando Norris by eight points after 12 races.

McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown continues to allow both drivers to compete freely, despite a collision incident in Canada.

“It’s the same rules — race hard, race clean, and get as many points as possible for the team. Let them decide who’s in front,” Brown emphasized.
