Aitana Bonmatí recovers from meningitis to win MVP in Euro quarter-finals

Aitana Bonmatí shared her remarkable journey with ESPN — from being hospitalized with viral meningitis to earning MVP honors in Spain’s 2-0 victory over hosts Switzerland in the European Championship quarter-finals.

The two-time Ballon d’Or winner provided a brilliant back-heel assist for the opening goal — an achievement made more special considering she had just been released from hospital days before the tournament began.

“Three weeks ago I was in a hospital bed, and a few days later I was playing in the first game. This is something to be proud of and shows my commitment to the team,” Bonmatí stated.

The 27-year-old midfielder emphasized that resilient mentality is key to her success:

  • Becoming first woman to win MVP in Champions League knockout stages
  • Earning similar honors at the Euros
  • Receiving same recognition at World Cup

Bonmatí also revealed plans to open a museum in her hometown of Sant Pere de Ribes — a space that will showcase her trophy collection, jerseys, and various memorabilia from fans reflecting her career journey.
