Ahead of Dortmund clash, Monterrey coach acknowledges opponent’s superiority

Domenec Torrent, Monterrey’s head coach, shared his perspective ahead of the Club World Cup round of 16 match against Borussia Dortmund — a team he acknowledges as superior in terms of squad and budget.

Monterrey advanced to the knockout phase after finishing second in Group E — collecting two draws and one victory, surpassing River Plate and Urawa Red Diamonds.

“It’s no secret that they are superior to us in terms of squad and budget, but Monterrey has already shown good performance in three previous games with different systems and playing ideas,” stated Torrent.

Torrent’s experience with Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff at Bayern Munich gives him deep understanding of Borussia Dortmund’s quality — knowledge he shares with his players to prepare for the required level of concentration.

The winner of this match will face either Real Madrid or Juventus in the quarter-finals. Monterrey qualified for this tournament after winning the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League by defeating Club America in the final.
