The arrival of David “Skylar” Schevenko on the Onic ID roster ahead of MPL ID Season 16 was undoubtedly a major surprise, especially given his status as a key player from a rival team. Recently, however, the Onic ID organization seems to have addressed the Indonesian MLBB community’s curiosity.

During a recent MPL ID media session, Onic management stated via social media that they had been monitoring the gold laner’s progress for some time. They expressed confidence that his skills would strengthen their current squad, which is undergoing a rebuilding phase.

This decision was further solidified by the departure of their star gold laner, Calvin “CW” Winata – a move reportedly planned since early 2025. To compensate for his absence, Onic promoted young player Clayton “Savero” Adrielo, who impressed as the MVP during the MPL ID Season 15 finals.

Skylar’s signing coincides with the return of Adi “Adi” Asyauri as head coach, reinstated after being demoted to analyst midway through the Regular Season. This reunion holds special significance: Skylar previously played under Adi when both were part of RRQ Hoshi from 2021 until early 2023 – Adi’s final year as RRQ’s head coach.

Concerns still linger around Skylar

Despite Skylar’s caliber, his arrival hasn’t been universally welcomed by the Yellow Porcupine ardent supporters. Some fans have expressed their worries that he could face a fate similar to Albert “Alberttt” Iskandar, another player signed from RRQ Hoshi in mid-2023.

At that time, Alberttt was touted as a promising young talent, potentially ready to step in for Kairi if needed. However, instead of making a splash, he spent most of his time warming the bench. He also appeared to struggle integrating his playstyle with key teammates like Nicky “Kiboy” Fernanda and Muhamad “Butsss” Sanubari on several occasions.

Although he showed promise in some matches outside MPL ID, Albert ultimately fell out of head coach Paul “Yeb” Denver’s plans. He subsequently sought new opportunities with Evos near the end of 2024. This history fuels the concerns of some Onic fans regarding Skylar’s direct competition with Savero for the same position.

Adding to the challenge, Savero has spent the past few months building chemistry with his more experienced teammates and performing well in crucial matches. Skylar will undoubtedly need to deliver top-tier performances to compete with his junior, who is notably still far from his peak competitive age.

Beyond competition, Skylar could also serve as an engagement magnet for MPL ID fans more familiar with his persona than his former team. Should his popularity surge, the organization might pivot him to an exclusive streaming role if he loses the starting spot to Savero – similar to Gerald “Dlar” Trinchera, who is currently inactive in the competitive circuit.
