Ahead of MPL ID Season 16, Onic ID has finalized their roster and made a major splash by signing star player David “Skylar” Schevenko from their biggest rival, RRQ Hoshi.

This mid-season shuffle sees minimal changes besides the departure of key gold laner Calvin “CW” Winata, who was dropped to reserve squad earlier this year, and head coach Paul “Yeb” Denver, who returns to his role as the VP of Onic Esports . Young duo Clayton “Savero” Adrielo and Lutfi “Lutpi” Ardianto remain core players this season.

The lineup is particularly exciting after Onic’s impressive Season 15 run. They overcame early group stage struggles to reach the playoffs, ultimately defeating RRQ in the finals to claim the championship trophy – surpassing their rivals’ achievements.

Fans are not completely happy with this new Onic squad

Yeb’s exit means analyst Adi “Adi” Asyauri returns as head coach after being replaced mid-season last year. This marks a special reunion, as Adi will coach Skylar again after parting ways in 2023.

Both were key figures in RRQ’s MLBB squad since 2021. Over three years, they spearheaded RRQ’s MPL ID Season 9 championship win and were strong contenders at international events like MSC 2022 and the M4 World Championship in Jakarta.

However, they often faced criticism from fans for their inflexibility against opponents’ strategies and rigidity in adapting to the competitive meta. Amidst this backlash, Adi left RRQ and joined Onic ID in January 2023.

Skylar carried on as RRQ’s star player, maintaining top form until MPL ID S14 ended in June 2024. The team’s subsequent disappointing results reportedly demotivated him, leading to a break from pro play before his official departure last Friday (8/8).

MPL ID S16 promises fierce competition

Onic ID isn’t the only team making surprising roster moves. Other competitors are expected to finalize and announce their lineups before MPL ID S16 kicks off on August 22nd.

Bigetron by Vitality, who suffered shock exit last season, signed former Onic wonderkid Manuel “Nnael” Simbolon. The young jungler gained recognition for his strong performance in the junior scene and was Geek Fam’s key player in 2023 (as a loanee).

Geek Fam, a consistent top Indonesian team, also made a move by signing former OPI academy player Marshall “Zeltron” Gunaputra as part of their squad rejuvenation plan.

Meanwhile, teams like Evos, RRQ, and Alter Ego are expected to field new rosters blending young local talent with international pro players. This is becoming an intriguing development as Indonesia is often considered as a top destination for foreign MLBB talents.
