Names of All Handball Playing Positions

In the world of handball, the concept of “position” plays a key role in determining the team’s tactics and strategy on the court. Each player occupies a specific position, which requires unique skills to perform the assigned tasks. The variety of playing roles makes handball an exciting and dynamic sport. Let’s look at the main  positions in handball  and their roles in the game.

Goalkeeper in handball

The goalkeeper is usually the tallest player. He is located within the goal. His main task is to prevent the ball from crossing the goal line. Unlike other positions, in the goalkeeper area he can use absolutely any part of his body to block the ball. This makes his game as spectacular and demanding as possible.

The goalkeeper must not only move along the goal line, but also jump and fall a lot. The result of the game directly depends on his physical condition. In addition to basic training, he works on individual mechanics according to an individual training program.

The goalkeeper in handball must always monitor the progress of the match and anticipate the actions of opponents when creating dangerous moments.

Point guard in handball

A key position on the court and always one of the strongest players, usually quite tall. Sets the pace and direction of the game. Organizes attacks and is responsible for defense. Is usually in the center of the court and passes the ball between the wing and line players, creating dangerous moments and maintaining a high pace of play.

The playmaker must be able to independently complete attacks when such situations arise, create space for his partners and independently find free space. Players acting as playmakers are universal and can replace any position if necessary.

Welterweight in handball

There are always two half-backs on the field. One is on the left and plays well with his right hand, and the other is on the right and plays well with his left hand. This system allows for the greatest effectiveness in attacking actions.

These player positions are located between the winger and the playmaker. Thus, to complete the attack, the half-backs must be well-developed physically and be able to throw the ball accurately and powerfully. Their role is important for attacking combinations and creating optimal conditions for the throw.

Lineman in handball

A position that combines power, technique and tactical thinking. The main weapon in the lineman’s arsenal is deceptive maneuvers aimed at confusing the goalkeeper. He is always on the move and must be able to effectively interact with his teammates to effectively defend and attack.

A line player in handball falls a lot, takes hits on himself, and often shoots at the goal while lying down. His physical strength and power combined with technique create a high threat, so he must train a lot and always be in good shape.

Corner or wing in handball

Short and fast players who dominate the flanks. Quick sprints, sharp changes of direction and the ability to use minimal space make the winger an important element in the team’s attacking combinations. The winger must have good physical fitness and stamina to withstand the high intensity of the game and constant movement around the field.
