De Ligt: Manchester United must rebuild confidence

Matthijs De Ligt acknowledges Manchester United needs to rebuild confidence after experiencing their worst season in 50 years.

The Red Devils began their United States preseason tour with a 2-1 victory over West Ham at MetLife Stadium. This result marks a positive step — considering they just finished 15th in the Premier League, their worst performance since relegation in 1974.

“After a season like that, it’s normal to have to build your confidence. With winning, you become more confident and start to believe more in what you’re doing,” said De Ligt.

New manager Ruben Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag last November, emphasizes that this preseason tour represents a fresh start for players and staff. This becomes his first opportunity to spend more time on the training ground with the squad.

Without European competition next season, De Ligt sees the positive side — the team will have more time to train and prepare maximally for domestic competitions.
