Ghana Claims Women’s Africa Cup Bronze After Defeating South Africa

Ghana secured third place in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations by defeating defending champions South Africa 4-3 on penalties in Casablanca. The regular time ended in a 1-1 draw — Andile Dlamini’s own goal canceled out Nonhlanhla Mthandi’s advantage.

The teams had previously met in the group stage, with South Africa winning 2-0. This time, the match was marked by crucial goalkeeper errors. Ghana’s Cynthia Konlan made a mistake leading to Mthandi’s goal in the 45th minute, while Dlamini’s blunder resulted in an own goal in the second half.

In the tense penalty shootout, Sibulele Holweni and Hildah Magaia failed to convert for South Africa. Nancy Amoh became Ghana’s hero by scoring the decisive penalty — securing their first medal in nine years.

“This is a very meaningful moment for us. We’ve waited long to return to the podium,” said Amoh after the match.
