Goldschmidt admits crucial error in Yankees’ loss to Phillies

Paul Goldschmidt acknowledged his tactical error during New York Yankees’ 12-5 loss to Philadelphia Phillies — a decision that led to a momentum shift in the game.

The four-time Gold Glove winner chose to throw home to prevent Trea Turner from scoring, instead of running to first base to retire Nick Castellanos. Goldschmidt’s errant throw sailed over catcher Austin Wells’ glove — allowing Turner to score the tying run.

The miscue marked Goldschmidt’s third error this season and Yankees’ 54th overall. Two pitches later, J.T. Realmuto hit a decisive three-run homer that sealed the Phillies’ victory.

Yankees now trail Toronto by 5.5 games in the American League East standings. The team’s bullpen performance is also concerning with a 4.28 ERA — ranking them 23rd among 30 teams.

“I should have just made the play at first base. Even with a perfect throw, Turner probably still beats that out,” said Goldschmidt admitting his mistake.
