Mascherano Reveals Reason Behind Messi’s MLS All-Star Game Absence

Javier Mascherano, Inter Miami’s head coach, has clarified that his team has not received any sanctions from Major League Soccer (MLS) regarding Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba‘s absence from the All-Star Game in Austin, Texas.

Despite being selected by fans and media to play, both players — absent due to fatigue and fitness concerns — did not appear at the prestigious event.

“Messi showed normal fatigue from the number of games and minutes he’s been playing,” explained Mascherano. “Players always have discomfort, especially when they play every three days.”

Both players returned to training on Friday for the first time this week, preparing for the match against FC Cincinnati at Chase Stadium.

Mascherano criticized the All-Star Game scheduling as non-ideal:

  • Packed schedule with four away games from last five matches
  • Insufficient rest time between matches
  • Demands from various competitions including Concacaf Champions Cup and Club World Cup

“If they want to do this type of event, there shouldn’t be a date in the regular schedule. It’s crazy. The first thing we have to think about is that football belongs to the players. And without players, it doesn’t exist,” added Mascherano.
