Laurent Mekies takes over Red Bull Racing after Christian Horner era

Laurent Mekies takes over a crucial position at Red Bull Racing — marking a new era for the Formula 1 team. His appointment reflects a growing trend in F1, where engineers increasingly fill team leadership positions.

Unlike his predecessor Christian Horner, Mekies has a strong engineering background. His diverse experience — spanning Ferrari, FIA, and Racing Bulls — provides unique perspective for his new role.

“I found someone that was incredibly hardworking. He understood the driver very well and had a special communication with drivers,” said Carlos Sainz about his experience working with Mekies at Ferrari.

Yuki Tsunoda and Max Verstappen also provided positive feedback. Verstappen, who has spent intensive time with Mekies in the past two weeks, said the new leader is highly motivated.

Helmut Marko confirmed that Mekies’ responsibilities will focus more on racing — different from Horner’s broader role. Mekies’ main challenges include car development for this season and the internal engine project for 2026.
