British Duo Raducanu and Norrie Upset Seeds in Washington Open

JAKARTAEmma Raducanu and Cameron Norrie delivered standout performances at the 2025 Washington Open, each toppling seeded opponents in a dramatic day for British tennis.

In the women’s singles, Raducanu stunned seventh seed Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine, winning 7-6(4), 6-4 in the first round. The British No. 3 showed resilience in a tight first set that lasted 71 minutes, rebounding from a lost lead in the tiebreak before closing the set. Despite Kostyuk rallying in the second, Raducanu held firm, breaking late and converting her second match point as the Ukrainian double-faulted under pressure.

“It was an extremely good win,” said the 2021 US Open champion.

“I’m happy with the way I fought through the first set and stayed tough when I needed to in the second.”

Next, Raducanu will face four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka, who advanced with a straight-sets victory over Yulia Putintseva.

Meanwhile, in the men’s draw, Norrie battled back from a set down to defeat second seed Lorenzo Musetti 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. It marked Norrie’s first win over a top-10 opponent in over two years. The 29-year-old found rhythm in the second set and showed grit in the decider, saving five break points and capitalizing on a key break in the sixth game.

“I’m just playing like a kid again,” said Norrie.

“I’ve let go of expectations and started enjoying the game more. That makes a big difference.”

Norrie now moves into the round of 16 to face 14th seed Brandon Nakashima of the United States.

The British duo’s success adds excitement to the tournament as they both eye deeper runs in the hardcourt event, a key warm-up for the US Open.
