Vasek Pospisil Announces Retirement after 18-Year Career

Canadian tennis veteran Vasek Pospisil has officially announced his retirement from professional tennis, bringing an end to an 18-year career that saw him become one of Canada’s most recognized players on the ATP Tour.

The 34-year-old made the announcement via social media and press statements, reflecting on nearly two decades of international competition. Pospisil first turned pro in 2007 and quickly rose through the ranks with a game defined by strong baseline play, a powerful serve, and relentless determination.

“After 18 years of dedicating my life to the sport I love, I’ve decided to retire from professional tennis,” Pospisil wrote.

“It’s been an incredible journey full of highs, lows, and unforgettable memories.”

Pospisil reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 25 in 2014 and was also a top doubles player, peaking at World No. 4. His biggest career highlight came in 2014, when he won the Wimbledon men’s doubles title alongside American Jack Sock — a historic achievement that cemented his name in Canadian tennis history.

In singles, he reached three ATP Tour finals and posted several notable Grand Slam performances, including a quarterfinal run at Wimbledon 2015.

Beyond his on-court achievements, Pospisil was also a vocal advocate for player rights. He co-founded the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) alongside Novak Djokovic, aiming to give players a stronger voice in the sport’s governance.

In his retirement message, Pospisil hinted at staying involved in tennis in some capacity, potentially in leadership, mentorship, or advocacy roles.

“This isn’t goodbye to tennis entirely—just the end of one chapter,” he said.

“I’m excited for what lies ahead.”

Pospisil’s impact on Canadian tennis has been profound, helping pave the way for the current generation of stars including Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov.

As he hangs up his racket, the tennis world bids farewell to a player known not just for his results, but for his passion, resilience, and commitment to improving the sport beyond the lines of the court.
