English Football Governance Act Officially Becomes Law

According to official UK government announcement, the Football Governance Act has received Royal Assent — marking a new era in English football regulation.

This regulation brings significant changes in club management — from Premier League to League 2 by implementing stricter financial oversight and involving fan voices in club decision-making.

“This is a proud and defining moment for English football,” stated Prime Minister Keir Starmer. “As someone who has loved the game all my life, I understand how deeply it runs through our communities.”

Key points in the law include:

  • Establishment of independent football regulator
  • New financial regulations for club sustainability
  • Standards for fan engagement in club decisions
  • Ban on joining closed competitions
  • Protection of club heritage

The law received strong parliamentary support with 415 votes in favor against 98 opposed — a decision coming four years after the controversial European Super League attempt.
