McLaren implements unique strategy in testing new F1 components

According to Autosport, Andrea Stella — McLaren team principal — revealed the team’s unique strategy in testing new car floor during British GP at Silverstone.

McLaren deliberately installed the new floor only for first practice session — an approach that demonstrates team’s confidence in component development. “This floor was indeed planned only for initial testing of new specification,” explained Stella.

The team then reverted to old floor for subsequent sessions — the component that brought Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to one-two finish. This decision was part of predetermined plan, not due to performance issues.

The new component will return at Belgian GP in Spa-Francorchamps. McLaren CEO Zak Brown confirmed — “The floor worked well and will be fitted to both our cars.”

Meanwhile, rival teams are also preparing to bring updates to Spa:

  • Ferrari will introduce new rear suspension
  • Red Bull plans to bring several additional improvements
  • Teams’ development focus starting to shift to 2026 regulations

McLaren’s careful approach in testing new components reflects team’s comfortable position — a luxury that most other teams on F1 grid don’t have.
