Ghana Eliminates Algeria on Penalties in WAFCON Quarter-finals

Ghana’s women’s national team secured their semifinal ticket in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after defeating Algeria on penalties 4-2 — following a goalless draw in regular and extra time.

Cynthia Konlan emerged as Ghana’s hero by saving two penalty kicks from Marine Dafeur and Ines Belloumou. Meanwhile, Ghana’s four penalty takers — Josephine Bonsu, Doris Boaduwaa, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, and Evelyn Badu executed their shots perfectly.

Ghana had celebrated a goal in the 27th minute through Stella Nyamekye, but the referee nullified it after VAR review for offside. Both teams actually had several golden opportunities — Ghoutia Karchouni from Algeria and Boye-Hlorkah from Ghana stood out by creating threats.

Ghana will now face host nation Morocco in the semifinal round. Meanwhile, Algeria must head home despite their impressive performance of not conceding any goals during the group phase — including holding title favorites Nigeria to a draw.
