Boone satisfied with Gil’s performance in second rehab start

Yankees manager Aaron Boone gave a positive assessment of Luis Gil’s performance in his second rehab start at Double-A Somerset.

Gil — the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year — recorded seven strikeouts while allowing two hits and two runs in 3⅓ innings. Of the 57 pitches thrown, 39 were strikes.

“Stuff was good with decent command,” said Boone. “More importantly — this is a step forward in building that pitch count up to 57.”

The right-hander still needs one more start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before his potential 2025 MLB debut. Gil — who suffered a lat injury during spring training — showed consistent fastball in the 95 mph range with top velocity reaching 97 mph.

Last season, Gil posted a 15-7 record with a 3.50 ERA and 171 strikeouts in 151⅔ innings for the Yankees.
