Rain at Dover Motor Speedway Forces NASCAR to Cancel Qualifying

According to NASCAR, heavy rain at Dover Motor Speedway forced the cancellation of Cup Series practice and qualifying sessions on Saturday afternoon — a situation complicated by the introduction of untested new Goodyear tires.

The starting grid will be determined using NASCAR’s metric system that combines several factors — last week’s fastest lap time, driver’s finishing position, owner’s finishing position, and owner’s points standing.

Chase Elliott from Hendrick Motorsports secured pole position and will share the front row with Chase Briscoe from Joe Gibbs Racing. The top five positions are completed by Christopher Bell, Tyler Reddick, and William Byron.

Last week’s Sonoma winner, Shane van Gisbergen, will start from sixth position — a less than ideal situation as he would prefer practice time and a rear start given his limited oval track experience.

  • Michael McDowell – P7
  • Joey Logano – P8
  • Ty Gibbs – P9
  • Kyle Busch – P10

Several big names will start from further back, including defending champion Denny Hamlin in P13, Ross Chastain P19, Kyle Larson P25, and Ryan Blaney P31.
