Eddie Howe Explains Alexander Isak’s Absence from Preseason Match

According to ESPN, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe explained Alexander Isak’s absence from the 4-0 preseason defeat against Celtic — linked to transfer speculation surrounding the Swedish striker.

Liverpool reportedly showed interest in acquiring Isak as their frontline solution for the new season. However, Howe, who will lead Newcastle in Champions League this season, emphasized his confidence that the 25-year-old will remain at the club.

“It was my decision. He traveled to Glasgow with us but I decided to send him home due to the speculation,” Howe explained after the match. “It wasn’t fair for him to sit in the stands watching, but I’m confident he will still be a Newcastle player after the transfer window closes.”

Howe acknowledged having discussions with Isak about his future — while emphasizing that the player maintains a professional attitude amid circulating rumors.

“Yes, I’ve had discussions with him, and that’s normal. I respect a player’s career and how short it is. Alex has been training very well despite the news around him.”
