Spain Makes History in Women’s Euro with Victory over Switzerland

Spain’s women’s national team wrote new history — advancing to European Championship semifinals for the first time after defeating hosts Switzerland 2-0 at Wankdorf Stadium in Bern.

Aitana Bonmatí stated, “We must value these moments. We stayed calm, confident and patient — now we have made history for the country.”

The match remained tight with Spain missing two penalties and hitting the woodwork three times. However, two goals within five minutes from Athenea del Castillo and Claudia Pina secured victory for the world champions.

Tremendous support came from 29,734 spectators who packed the stadium. Swiss coach Pia Sundhage expressed her pride, “Despite the loss, the crowd’s enthusiasm shows that women’s football is important in Switzerland.”

Spain will face either France or Germany in the semifinal to be held in Zurich next Wednesday.
