Putri KW Falls in Quarterfinals, Indonesia Out of Women’s Singles at Japan Open 2025

TOKYO – Indonesia’s campaign in the women’s singles category of the BWF World Tour Super 750 Japan Open 2025 officially ended after Putri Kusuma Wardani, the nation’s last remaining representative, was eliminated in the quarterfinals on Friday (July 18).

Putri fell short against second seed Wang Zhi Yi of China in a hard-fought battle lasting 1 hour and 26 minutes at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. She lost in three games: 22-20, 17-21, 16-21.

“My game was inconsistent. I couldn’t maintain stable technique and strategy, especially during the crucial points,” said Putri KW in a statement from PP PBSI.

Putri drew attention early by snatching the first game in dramatic fashion. The match was intense from the beginning, with both players trading points before Putri clinched two straight points at 20-20 to win 22-20.

In the second game, world No. 2 Wang Zhi Yi stepped up her aggression. Though Putri closed the gap to 13-14, Wang kept her momentum and closed it out 21-17.

The deciding game was equally competitive. Putri trailed 10-11 at the interval but briefly led 15-14. Unfortunately, her focus wavered in the final stretch. Wang capitalized and secured victory by winning seven of the last eight points.

“I’m somewhat satisfied to take one game, but it’s not enough since I didn’t win. There’s still a lot I need to improve, especially my focus in the closing moments,” Putri added.

With this result, Indonesia will not have a women’s singles representative in the semifinals of the Japan Open 2025. Despite the exit, Putri’s performance showed positive signs of progress, a valuable step forward as she prepares for future major tournaments.
