Rally1 WRC fuel system changes allowed after issues in Greece

According to Motorsport.com, World Rally Championship (WRC) Rally1 teams have been granted permission to modify their fuel systems — a measure taken following various issues at the Acropolis Rally in Greece.

Fuel system problems at last month’s rally forced several drivers to retire, including Sami Pajari, Martins Sesks, and Gregoire Munster from Toyota and M-Sport-Ford teams. Extreme temperatures reaching 70°C in car cockpits are suspected to be the main cause of these issues.

This situation emerged after WRC switched to a new fuel supplier — TotalEnergies replacing P1 Racing Fuels which went into administration last April. FIA confirmed there are no issues with fuel quality, and TotalEnergies will remain the supplier until the season’s end.

“The FIA has supported manufacturers by facilitating discussions with suppliers and updating regulations to ensure flexibility for teams,” stated an FIA spokesperson.

Ahead of Rally Estonia this week, Rally1 teams are permitted to fit different fuel tanks without using homologation jokers — a special allowance given the circumstances.
