Gregoria Mariska loses in first round of Japan Open 2025

Indonesian women’s singles player Gregoria Mariska Tunjung suffered a defeat in her comeback match at the Japan Open 2025 held at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, Japan.

The Paris 2024 Olympics bronze medalist had to acknowledge the superiority of Japanese underdog Riko Gunji with a decisive score of 10-21, 12-21 in the match held on Tuesday (15/7).

“Of course I’m happy to return to tournaments but in terms of results, it’s not what I wanted,” expressed Gregoria.

“My game wasn’t good at all, while my opponent played very bravely and could control the match,” she added.

Japan Open 2025 marks Gregoria’s first tournament after a three-month absence since the 2025 Asian Championships in April — the Indonesian athlete appeared to struggle matching her opponent’s tenacious playing style.
