Paula Badosa Suffers New Back Injury, US Open Status in Doubt

Paula Badosa announces she will be sidelined for several weeks due to a new back injury — the world number 10 is now fighting to recover before next month’s US Open.

The former world number two from Spain had just returned to the top 10 after a series of injuries, including chronic lower back issues that had her considering retirement.

Following her first-round Wimbledon defeat to Katie Boulter with a score of 6-2 3-6 6-4, Badosa revealed she suffered a tear in her psoas muscle — the muscle connecting the lower back to the upper leg.

“These are really challenging times for me, but I’m staying hopeful that things will turn around soon and the light at the end of the tunnel will start to shine through,” said Badosa, adding that the injury occurred before Wimbledon.

Badosa is scheduled to partner with Stefanos Tsitsipas in the US Open’s revamped mixed doubles event, set to take place a week before the main singles draw from August 24 to September 7.
