Mead and Toone share grief over parents loss at Euro 2025

Beth Mead and Ella Toone — two key players for England — share a touching bond over the loss of their parents during Euro 2025 campaign.

Both found the net in England’s 6-1 victory over Wales — a match that secured their quarter-final spot against Sweden. After scoring, they pointed to the sky in dedication to their departed parents.

“She has been amazing,” said Toone about Mead. “We have bonded over such a difficult situation. It means so much to have someone who understands what we’re going through.”

“We’re sure my dad and Mead’s mum are up there having a few pints watching us,” Toone shared after the match.

Mead lost her mother to ovarian cancer in January 2023, while Toone’s father passed away from prostate cancer last September. Both acknowledged the challenge of playing without their parents in the stands.

“I’ve been a shoulder to lean on for her,” explained Mead about supporting Toone. “There are moments when she asks if her feelings are normal, and I understand because I’ve been through the same.”
